- In the latest AMSOIL Signature Series episode, veteran off-road racers Brad Lovell and Roger Lovell give new meaning to the term “taking the scenic route." Join them as they ditch the pavement and travel 550 miles to forge rivers, crest mountain passes and plow through mud holes all in a 1943 Willys MB Jeep.

Reminds me of my Dad and I driving our new at the time 62 Willys wagon through the back country on old logging and wagon trail roads 4x4ing and camping under the stars.. There wasn't much out there in those days, just beauty at its finest... AZ, CO, UT, NV... I also did it with my sons....Good to see someone else teaching there kids about it and letting them see things like this before its turns into some development or paved road of some sort..
I applaud you for taking your son for an adventure he will never forget. I have nothing against getting your kids interested in playing ball or fishing, but far too many do not learn to take care of themselves in an outdoor situation. I am cursed to be narmally a flat lander, but my son lives near Denver and still spends a lot ot time where my folks had a cabin in Chalk Creek Canyon about half a mile from St Elmo which is where I go as often as I can. Thanks for a good ride and letting me share your adventure.
I saw this video as a RUclips ad and watched every minute of it. Normally I skip the ad after 5 seconds. Afterwards I signed up for the Signature Series and subscribed to this channel because I enjoyed the ad so much! I've just moved to Arizona from Florida and I'm so glad I did. I traded my Chevy Equinox in for an older Jeep Commander and without having any experience started hitting the trails with it. What a blast! I'm also into gold prospecting now. Couldn't do this without my trusted Jeep and videos like these that keep the dream alive. Life is one big adventure if you make it that way! Don't wait!
That whole video resonated with me so much. Locked Gates are such a bummer.
Tore off a rear drive shaft back in the wilds, good thing it was 4x4.....rolled another, lost one in a stream.....every trip had a signature to remember ....that was in the late sixties and now I am to old to go again , BUT, l have those memories and sometimes in my rocker on the front porch, I Relive them!!!! A 46', 47, 65, 69, 74, 48 and currently a 52 ...all the "Willys loves of my life_! "Willys...never leave home without one"!
What a fantastic video! Great that you did it with the kids. I love that you did it in the MB. No mention of how you overcame the head gasket issue. The pic at the end of day 3 at night, that's awesome. Background pic stuff. We live in a country where we can still do this. And safely. Lets keep our freedoms that let us have these hobbies. You know what I mean.
Thanks so much for taking the time to watch, David! We are glad you enjoyed it. It was a memorable trip for everyone & we feel lucky to have had the opportunity to document it!
David Keeton You know I had to say it but the issue turned out to be a bad distributor cap. We didn’t find it until a year later. I have never seen anything like it. It was a replacement cap that was somehow defective.
This is the most awesome video on You Tube! To travel 500 miles across breathtakingly beautiful country had to be just sheer pleasure. I watched as an ad...didn't even watch the featured video. I have to watch it again...enjoyed it so much! I had the experience of riding in a "modified" Willys Jeep while an Air Force paramedic in Arizona and working with EOD. What a wonderful part of our history...the Willys Jeep. Thank you so much for sharing it.
Thanks so much for the kind words, Alexander! We are glad you enjoyed it. We will pass your message along to Brad Lovell and the crew, they will be happy to hear it!
Nothing like taking a trip on beautiful trails in the best jeep ever made.
AMSOIL is a top notch co.I sold their products in the 80s and used them all ,dont forget they started the synthetic revolution,I wish their distribution was a bit more affordable for the average motor head and dealer,Great video, wish we had areas on the east coast to wheel llike that
GOD-given scenery and the music is so beautiful!I was born in Ft.Collins Colorado!
I can’t wait to watch this on my TV. That thumbnail is Jenny Creek and prior to the reroute, my favorite trail. I’m going to do a trail guide on the new route this summer 😐
I can't think of a better way to share an adventure with your son. Great video!
What a terrific adventure and to include a 43 Willys is amazing I take my hat off to you! I collect M series US military trucks and I spend a lot of time on logging trails with guys running military jeeps exactly like yours and its so very easy to lose your perspective on just what it means to run a vehicle like and older Jeep, they are Nothing like any modern vehicle we use today and its way more of a challenge to get the job done with 60 HP, little NDT tires very little ground clearance etc. etc.! In their day there was no better and its a true pleasure to see somebody doing a trip like this with a vehicle like that, i means a hell of a lot more to both you and your son! I cannot tell you just how impressed I really am, my hugest congrats on a run very well done!!!!
Karl K Thanks Karl I have spent my career building ever more capable vehicles. I love it but it was really important to find the adventure we used to experience. Wet brakes, stalling engine, clutch, no parking brake. This was the real deal. Great fun to look back on.
@@lovellracing5863 It was sure a pleasure to watch that old Jeep do its job and I do know the struggles and dealing with limitations that the jeep has. I run a Unimog 1300L because its one of the smallest trucks I own and we will drive through some cruddy trails and the jeep guys will be in low range just struggling to get through one time one of the guys asked me what gear I was in going through the rough stuff and I just didnt have the heart to tell them I was in 3rd and haven't touched 4 wd the entire trip. I do love my Unimog but truthfully in watching you guys I have definitely lost some of the adventure that you guys got to live on this trip. Gosh I hate it when I see something that looks so darned fun AND challenging with the Jeep you have I bet you felt like a million bucks when you finished this run, talk about accomplishment!! I havent felt that in a long time! Thanks God I need to pull and rebuild the radiator On a HEMTT next week it will give me time to cool down a bit after your video! Thanks again for posting it was a true pleasure to watch!!!!
Thank you for sharing!! I run Amsoil in all my car. My 03 Land cruiser and my 93 VW corrado. It's been awesome!!
That trip was so fun you guys thanks for the suport
THANK YOU for taking this old codger up a mountain I’ll never be able to climb! Even in a 43 MB.
Gary Bowen It was truly an adventure! Scary, cold, tiring, rewarding, etc. We’re looking forward to more soon.
What a Journey! Always like adventures. Thanks for putting this out there for people to see.
Thank you for sharing this adventure.
Great video and good adventure and such a good place to share a good time with your son. My family got started in Chalt Creek Canyon between Buenta Vista and Salida in early 60s and now my son is trampling those same ones you went over, Tin Cup Pass and Hancock Pass where we spent so much time while he was growing up. We, also were up there when you were in Sept. of 17. This is still mt fav. place to be even at 77 and hey, got to go up Tin Cup Pass in my 2004 Jeep Wrangler. I will have to put a Torsen limited locker in the rear as the clutches are wearing out in my factory rear end. Thanks againg for the ride a long. C U outthere
Awesome video. Reminds of the Land Rover LR4 coast to coast off-road trip they took a few years back. Great job. 60horsepower. Great accomplishment.
Tout simplement magnifique, belle voiture, beau paysage, belle réalisation.,merci.
I have a 1954 M38A1 that I fully restored and I would love to try that trip with it, but I don't think I would trust it that far! Glad you were all okay!
Great Trip, cool locations. The best father and son can do. Thanks for great pictures. Here in germany there is no chance to do trips like this. At least... the willys is best 4x4 ever build..only my 2ct. Greetings from many 1000miles away. Jörg
Muchísimas gracias por compartir vuestra aventura con nosotros. Se me ha hecho cortísimo el vídeo. Gracias desde La Rioja, España.
Awesome adventure 👍👍👍❤️
awesome tour.Nature, off roading tent camp. All are awesome
This was great! Thanks for posting.
Glad you liked the video!
Outstanding!
What an inspirational video! this is on my bucket list.
Pearl Pass holds snow late in to summer some years. It's only passable a couple months a year...would have LOVED to see that Willys attempt it...
Nice work Thanks
Thank you so much for watching!
Hey thanks for posting this!
Great trip. If you ever want to do something similar in Alaska I'd love to help. Great video guys.
Thanks! We'll keep that in mind!
Thank you
Awesome trip. I wish you could post the route you took. I would love to take my son and pops. Once this covid-19 stuff is over
nick dorendorf It should be live on AMSOIL’s community page. This year featured was pretty rough due to snow but the ‘18 and ‘19 trips were both epic!
Awesome trip. I would have liked to see a roll bar of some sort in the Willy's jeep
electricamir248 I’m all about reasonable safety. There were no seat belts and no roll bar. It’s all time top speed is also 50 mph. The danger is very apparent without these safety features and one reason why we avoided every bit of blacktop we could. There were a handful of times I had the kids get out and a couple times we discussed proper “bailout” procedures. I guess I’m the type of guy willing to take a reasonable amount of well understood risk.
Very cool. Notes taken for our summer tomorrow..
amamzing. That bronco II looks insane.
I'm glad with the vehicle choice. Keeping it old school was very cool instead of going the easy route with a sponsored rig like a RZR or something else of the sort.
Beautifully done. Keep it up. I'm restlessly awaiting my new Mahindra Thar (Jeep) here in India. Just can't wait to go out like you all and explore the nature...
Great video... I have a 46 cj2a I'm restoring and looking forward to the trails and exploring...
Awesome video! I actually ran into you guys in St Elmo Ghost Town. I was making my way up Tincup and you guys were heading over to Hancock. So glad I stumbled across this video. I've also experienced the Grand Mesa and I know what you mean with those mud holes and tight trails. What an adventure!
Thanks for the message Brad! What a small world. Glad you enjoyed the video!
AMSOIL INC. what pass we're you on at 6:41
Brad Anderson That was Taylor Pass coming up from Taylor Park. Cold with lightening and rain. Tough!
@@lovellracing5863 Do you guys have a track of the route you took that you could share. Would love to do that route. I was stationed at Ft. Carson in the early 80’s and we use to go up to Cheyenne mountain and have fun! It would be a blast to see that area again. Thanks!
Que de beaux paysages ! Heu .. les arceaux de la jeep sont utiles avec une bâche, contre la pluie ! ;-)
Belle balade qui donne envie. Bravo.
Cool! Beautiful nature, very similar as in Russia! Good video!
i love the mix of vehicles.
guess this channel will have to be my new motortrend since its now not allowed to be viewed in NZ! nice video great edit ect cheers amsoil :)
St. Elmo's Fire, favorite band of mine in high school.
Awesome video, I would definitely like to know the route you took, I don’t have an awesome old Willy’s but that would still be a great adventure in our JK plus I’m a little to old to get beat up on the trails in a Willys. My kids are all grown but I would still love to have them along on an adventure like this. You guys are truly motivating.
What an awesome adventure story/video. What a great way to spend a week with your kids and family. Do you have a route map of the trails/passes you took to help plan an adventure like this myself? Thanks for taking the time to share this adventure.
Hi Carlos, We're glad you enjoyed the video! To help answer your question, Brad and the crew do have the route in Google Earth. Roughly it went from COS to Cripple Creek, across the south side of South Park, over Hancock Pass, Cumberland, Taylor, Pearl (snowed off), then Schofield. They then went across Grand Mesa, down Lands End and into the Delores Triangle before reaching Moab. They had to take a couple bypasses due to snow, construction, and potential private property. Stay tuned for Expedition Colorado 2018 coming up at the end of July! Follow AMSOIL INC. and Brad Lovell on Social Media, as they will be doing Geocaching and offering up some great prizes for those who want to embark on the journey themselves! Keep us posted if you have any other questions!
great job
Props for no roll cage on that beautiful ww2 jeep i got one as well and will never put a cage on it! ^-^
Love the views love Colorado!
Great Video! So beautiful landscape!! thumbs up!!!!!!! :)
Should make this a yearly AMSOIL event..
Thats what I'm talking about!
id be game for that!
very nicely done loved it
Give y'all props for having an open cab. A canopy would be nice to stay outta the hail
brad11344 yea... we used the top in subsequent years 🤣
Just a FYI on the vapor lock Take a 2 inch pvc tube 3 ft long now take a 4 foot section of steel fuel line wrap it around the pvc in a nice tight coil remove the pvc flare the ends of the line with fittings run this up behind the fan this coil will be cooled by the fan as you run
Wow espectacular!!!
Great video. I live just north of COSprings and have been to Moab, but I've always driven the highway. Your way looks great. Any chance there's a .ap of your route anywhere?

Great video, love the old military rig. Is there any chance you would share you GPX file on your rout ? Thanks again for making this video
Glad you enjoyed the video! We don't have a GPX file, but roughly the route went from COS to Cripple Creek, across the south side of South Park, over Hancock Pass, Cumberland, Taylor, Pearl (snowed off), then Schofield. We then went across Grand Mesa, down Lands End and into the Delores Triangle before reaching Moab. We had to take a couple bypasses due to snow, construction, and potential private property.
Wonderful adventure and more importantly great memories learned and earned... and all done without one roof top tent, awning, or ARB fridge/freezer. Imagine that! I'll be damned. Lol
Such a great adventure. Do you have to have the route mapped for us to look at?
Hi T.J. - Glad you enjoyed the video! The Lovell's have shared their Google Earth route. Keep us posted if you have any additional questions!
Hi T.J. - Could you tell us how to find the Google Earth Route. Does it have a name etc? Thanks and what a great experience!
I could not find it, sorry
Love the video. Can someone tell me what mapping app they’re using to map the routes and reroutes?
Cool 👍👍
What course did you take from CO springs? On the webpage and map it shows nothing from CO springs to Lake City?
The route on the page you are likely looking at is from 2019. For this trip, roughly, the route went from COS to Cripple Creek, across the south side of South Park, over Hancock Pass, Cumberland, Taylor, Pearl (snowed off), then Schofield. We then went across Grand Mesa, down Lands End and into the Delores Triangle before reaching Moab. We had to take a couple bypasses due to snow, construction, and potential private property.
OMG! I have a 1962 CJ I restored to a M38 a1 , I have worked hard in construction my whole life! No summer vacations in road construction! I am retiring mid summer 2019 next year! Is there anyway you can point me in right direction to do this in 2020 perhaps? My wife and I road to colorado on harley and camped in 2014. This was one of two summer vacations in my 36 years working! To trailer my willys out there with a group of like minded individuals would be a dream come true for me! did you weld the spiders in the old jeep rear end or install a diff lock? Thinking of doing it to mine? Amsoil synthetic ok to run in old babbit engines?
Any more details on the route that was taken? Would love to do this with my son when hes older. Building my cj5 with like stuff like this in mind
Did you end up with a blown head gasket after all? Made sense since you had overheating early on.
@AMSOIL INC. What month of the year did you try to get through Pearl Pass? I'm trying to do that pass In September this year. Is there a chance the snow could be too deep?
Should be open now, but due to low snowfall this year.
I always put myself in a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee for my Adventures.
Great adventure guys! I'd like to something similar. Is the map of your route posted anywhere? You said you took Tincup Pass in the video. Did you mean Taylor Pass?
Yes... I did. I have the route in Google Earth. Roughly it went from COS to Cripple Creek, across the south side of South Park, over Hancock Pass, Cumberland, Taylor, Pearl (snowed off), then Schofield. We then went across Grand Mesa, down Lands End and into the Delores Triangle before reaching Moab. We had to take a couple bypasses due to snow, construction, and potential private property.
Epic trip guys! I hope to do that route someday. I love wheelin in Colorado and Moab.
dig the Ranger I have its extended cab twin
Awesome.
where did you keep the backup fuel ?
Great video! I am a CO Springs local and would love to run this same route, or one similar. How would I go about finding the planned route for this trip??
Google Earth...
neverlost0121 it should be on AMSOIL’s community page (or the map from the following year). This route was TOUGH. We have a couple good routes but only good for July / August when the snow is melted.
I wanna take this adventure in my k5 camp and drink alot of beer on the way up the pass
If you're going to drink and drive, I pray I'm not on the road at the same time you are.
Your guys video really inspired me to do this same trip with my son and a friend. I live in Denver. Would you please be so kind and tell me where I can find the route you guys took? You mention some closed trails due to private property??? How do I go about planning out the roads to drive??? Thank you!

Thank you for the reply. The route info helps me a lot.
Is there anyway to get the route for this trip? I wanna take my son on it. I've been all over colorado but havent done the tin cup area

awrooster2311 The map should be on AMSOIL’s community webpage for the following year. This year was pretty gnarly and needed perfection. We are happy to share. We have another route from Moab to Lake City.
@@lovellracing5863 ok thank you and I'll give it a look
That Bronco II tho!
In a way, made me cringed seeing the abuse the willys is put through in this video but it felt right, good to see it pushing on. Willys still got it. Wish I could find one of those.
Awesome
How much of this route would be passable in April or may? Obviously the passes wouldn't.
Any way to get a map of the route travelled?

as a former flat fender owner, they would have had a better experience if they'd dropped that front windshield.
Sharek Gadd we did on and off. The worst was in heavy rain as it would get wet on both sides and only a little hand wiper! Cold too!

what was the route that was taken?
Roughly it went from COS to Cripple Creek, across the south side of South Park, over Hancock Pass, Cumberland, Taylor, Pearl (snowed off), then Schofield. We then went across Grand Mesa, down Lands End and into the Delores Triangle before reaching Moab. We had to take a couple bypasses due to snow, construction, and potential private property.
Never mentioned any of the Amsoil products used.
We bought the MB out of a museum where it had been sitting for 20+ years so we did all the fluids. AMSOIL Signature Series 10w-30 motor oil, 75w-90 in the axles, MTGin the transfer case and (I think) transmission. Either way, its new lifeblood in every line is AMSOIL. We also use this for race support at TORC events but will start wrenching on it again this winter.
Lovell Racing how did you get an MB out of a museum. I would love to have one of those things
Boodieman72 thank god
So I'm curious. What was wrong with the Jeep? Was it a blown head gasket?
Sean Frank I hate to say it but a bad distributor cap! We didn’t find it until a year later. It was a manufacturing defect on a reproduction part. Never seen anything like it! I smashed it up to little bits with a hammer!
@@lovellracing5863 LOL. The only way to deal with crappy parts. Smash em!
Amsoil should make 2 stroke and sae 30 weight if they don't for yard tools and small street and off vehicles!🛢🌄
Wow, i hope i can do it.
is that a bronco 2? any info on that thing?
with the white fenders. or is it just a ranger that's been chopped up?
More info on the Ford with white fiberglass bodywork please.
It started life as a Bronco II. It now has been narrowed 6", extended 13" with a 5.0 V8, T18, Dana 44 and Spidertrax 9". Rear suspension is trailing arm setup with coilovers and bypass shocks. Fiberglass is ranger bedsides and fenders. Sometime it may get painted..
